What is Z Image Turbo?

Z Image Turbo is the free model on this site — 0 credits on every plan, and the one the generator starts on before you pick anything else. It is Alibaba Tongyi Lab's open-source speed model, and what it buys you is a natural photographic look plus short display text in English and Chinese: both poster tests below came back correctly spelled on the first take.

It is not a flagship, and this page shows where that bites. We reran two instruction-heavy briefs from our GPT Image 2 test set: the scene looks right, but the specifics drift — four lemons where the brief said three, an apple in the wrong hand. It also ignores negative prompts by design and takes no reference images. When the brief is a spec or the text is dense, spend credits on GPT Image 2 or Seedream 5 Pro.

What reviewers say

“The new "value king," offering a great balance of quality vs. efficiency.”
— getimg.ai — Z-Image Turbo review
“The quality gap is way smaller than the speed gap.”
— pxz.ai — Z-Image Turbo vs FLUX
“Short text works well. Sentences, paragraphs, or densely typeset layouts still produce errors — missing letters, mirrored characters, or garbled words.”
— saascrmreview.com — Z-Image Turbo review

Every image in the groups below was generated on this page on 19 August 2026 — 14 prompts, 14 first-take results, 12 to 33 seconds each. Each group tests the claim above it, including the one it fails.

A photographic look, not a "free model" look

This is the strength reviewers keep circling: output that reads as a photograph rather than a render. The three below are single-sentence prompts, first take — no retries, no cherry-picking. Look at the weathered hands on the fisherman, the crust texture on the bread, the way the neon doubles in wet asphalt. For social content, mood boards and everyday images, this is usable as-is, and it cost nothing to find out.

Z Image Turbo rainy dusk street scene with a woman under a transparent umbrella and neon reflections3:2 · 1536×1024 · 23s

Three one-line prompts, three first takes, all under half a minute. None of these would embarrass a paid model — that is the whole argument for drafting here first.

Where it gives ground: briefs with exact specifics

These two prompts are copied word for word from our GPT Image 2 test set, where the flagship followed both to the letter. Z Image Turbo gets the scene, the light and the mood right — and misses the specifics. The counter holds four lemons where the brief says three, and the towel ends up under the fruit instead of between the objects. The three people are dressed exactly as asked, but the umbrella is open instead of closed, the apple sits in her right hand instead of her left, and the "full bodies" are cropped at the ankles. Read each brief beside its image and count for yourself.

The brief we gave it

A kitchen counter scene containing precisely four items and nothing else: a cast-iron skillet at the back left, three whole lemons stacked in a small pyramid at the front right, a folded blue-striped tea towel between them, and a single sprig of rosemary lying diagonally across the towel. Soft window light from the left.

Z Image Turbo kitchen counter test: four lemons where the brief asked for three in a pyramid
1:1 · 1536×1536 · 29s

Three people standing in a row against a plain grey wall, exactly as described: on the left a woman in a mustard-yellow raincoat holding a closed black umbrella; in the centre a man in a navy turtleneck holding nothing; on the right a woman in a white shirt holding a single red apple in her left hand. Even frontal light, full bodies visible, no other people or objects.

Z Image Turbo three-person lineup: open umbrella instead of closed, apple in the wrong hand
1:1 · 1536×1536 · 26s

Same briefs, two models: GPT Image 2 landed every constraint on its page; the free model landed the look and lost the specifics. That is the honest trade — and since it also ignores negative prompts by design, phrase everything as what you want, not what to avoid.

One free model, three output sizes

Z Image Turbo is free on every plan; what changes with your plan is the canvas. Free accounts render at a 512px base, Premium at 1024px, Ultimate at 1536px — the API's maximum. The three below are the same prompt with the same fixed seed, one per tier. Worth knowing before you rely on it: the model re-renders the scene at each size rather than upscaling, so composition shifts as the canvas grows — and in our test the 1536px version actually dropped the crackle glaze the prompt asked for while the two smaller ones kept it.

Same prompt, same seed, only the output size changed. Note what the biggest render lost: the crackle pattern in the glaze. More pixels bought smoother ceramic, not more of what the prompt asked for — a genuine quirk of this model, not a tier upsell.

Ava agent recommending a model with ranking and credit context

The free half of a paid workflow

Running Z-Image-Turbo yourself means a GPU with around 16GB of VRAM and a ComfyUI or diffusers setup; here it is a login. It is also the model our Ava agent reaches for by default when a free-plan brief is a straightforward text-to-image draft — and Ava routes past it the moment the brief calls for something it cannot do, sending typography work to GPT Image 2 and photoreal finals to Seedream. Every generation keeps its prompt and parameters in history, so the winning draft is one click away from a flagship re-render on the same subscription.

The rest of what we ran

Five more first-take outputs from the same 19 August 2026 batch, each with the exact prompt. Across all 14 runs: 12s fastest, 24s median, 33s slowest, timed from submit to finished image.

Who Z Image Turbo is for

It is the default model here for a reason — these are the jobs where free is also right.

  • Anyone trying AI images for the first time

The generator on this page already has it selected, results land in under half a minute, and a miss costs nothing. There is no cheaper way to learn what prompts do.

  • Social and content creators posting daily

Nine ratios cover square feeds, 9:16 stories and 2:1 headers, and the photographic look above is usable as-is for everyday posts.

  • Prompt writers iterating toward a paid render

Draft ten variations here, keep the one that works, re-run it on GPT Image 2 or Seedream from history. The free drafts are what make the flagship credits go further.

  • Poster makers working in English or Chinese

Short display text — a headline, a date line, two hanzi — came back correct on the first take in both our tests. Keep it headline-sized and proofread anything longer.

  • Not for: spec-tight briefs and fine print

Exact counts, left-right assignments and dense typography drift, as the brief tests above show. When the image is a spec, that is what the flagships are for.

How to use Z Image Turbo online

Start Generating Images
  1. Open the workspace

Create a free account — no API key, no GPU, no setup. Z Image Turbo is the default model, so the generator on this page is already set to it.

  2. Describe what you want — not what you don't

The model ignores negative prompts by design, so "a clean empty desk" works and "no clutter" does not. One clear sentence with the subject, light and mood is usually enough.

  3. Pick one of nine ratios

Square, portrait, landscape, 9:16 stories or 2:1 headers. Output resolution follows your plan automatically — nothing to configure.

  4. Iterate free, then upgrade the keeper

Results land in seconds, so draft as many takes as the idea needs. When one is worth finishing, re-run its prompt from history on a flagship model.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Is Z Image Turbo really free?

Yes — generations cost 0 credits on every plan, including the Free plan. It is the designated drafting model on this site, so exploring prompts here never touches the credits you are saving for a flagship render.

2

How fast is Z Image Turbo?

In our 14 runs on 19 August 2026, images took 12 to 33 seconds from submit to finished result, with a median of 24 seconds — queue and delivery included. The model itself is one of the fastest anywhere: Alibaba reports sub-second inference on data-centre GPUs; what you experience here is the full round trip.

3

What resolution do I get?

It follows your plan: a 512px base on Free, 1024px on Premium and 1536px on Ultimate — the model's API maximum. Same model, same prompt box; the canvas grows with the plan, and the generator applies the best size you qualify for automatically.

4

Can Z Image Turbo render text?

Short display text, yes — and unusually for an open model, in both English and Chinese. Our two poster tests came back correctly spelled on the first take, including a date line with an em dash and the hanzi 春茶. Reviewers agree the limit is density: sentences and paragraph-length text degrade into missing or garbled letters. Keep it headline-sized here, or use GPT Image 2 for text-heavy layouts.

5

What is Z Image Turbo bad at?

Three things, from our own runs. Briefs with exact specifics drift — our tests came back with four lemons instead of three, an open umbrella instead of closed, and an apple in the wrong hand. Negative prompts are ignored by design, so constraints must be phrased positively. And this channel takes no reference images, so there is no image-to-image or character consistency. For any of those, upgrade the prompt to GPT Image 2, Seedream 5 Pro, or Nano Banana.

6

Z Image Turbo vs GPT Image 2 — which should I use?

Draft here, finish there. We ran the same two instruction-heavy briefs on both: GPT Image 2 followed every constraint; Z Image Turbo got the look right and missed specifics. The free model is the right tool for exploring ideas and everyday images at zero cost; GPT Image 2 is the right tool when typography, exact layouts, or reference images decide whether the image is usable.

7

Is Z Image Turbo open source, and can I use the images commercially?

The model is Apache 2.0 open source from Alibaba's Tongyi Lab — you can run it yourself on a GPU with around 16GB of VRAM. Images you generate here can be used in personal and commercial projects under our terms of service; you remain responsible for prompt content, trademarks, and likeness rights.
