Best Nano Banana Alternatives (2026): Measured on Edits, Faces and Text

Nano Banana 2 is a superb editor, but in Gemini it is rate-limited and quick to refuse real-person photos. We compare GPT Image 2.5, Seedream 5 Pro, Seedream 4.0, Qwen Image 3 and Grok Imagine Image 2 with credit prices and our own measured tests — and say where Nano Banana still wins.

Best Nano Banana Alternatives (2026): Measured on Edits, Faces and Text

The short version

"Nano Banana" is Google's image model inside Gemini (Nano Banana 2, and Nano Banana Pro on paid plans). It is the model that made "put my cat in a costume" go viral. People look for alternatives for two reasons: Gemini's daily limits and its safety filter, which refuses a large share of real-person photo edits.

  • For photo edits that keep everything else untouched: GPT Image 2.5. In our September test it changed 1.1% of pixels outside the edit box versus 4.5–5.4% for Seedream 5 Pro and 5, and finished edits in 43–55 seconds.
  • For print-quality realism and the cleanest skin and sky: Seedream 5 Pro (measured sky grain 0.70 versus 3.25 for GPT Image 2.5).
  • For real-person photos that Gemini refuses: Seedream 5 and 4.0 almost never refuse a real photo; on CreateVision their image-to-image failure rate is 7–12% versus 34% for Nano Banana 2 beta.
  • For the cheapest decent edit: Seedream 4.0 at 20 credits, Qwen Image 3 at 20 credits.
  • Still Nano Banana: multi-reference fusion (up to 14–16 references) and family or group composites with children, which GPT Image 2 refuses — our Christmas card tool still runs on Nano Banana Pro for that reason.

Prices and tests as of 10 September 2026.

Why people look for a Nano Banana alternative

From our own generation logs and the Gemini threads on Reddit:

The safety filter refuses real people

"Add a woman to a 50s film-noir scene" gets refused in Gemini; Flash refuses far more than Pro. On CreateVision, 34% of image-to-image jobs on Nano Banana 2 beta failed in the four weeks to 4 September 2026, most of them "real person photos are not supported". Seedream 5 failed 12% and Seedream 4.0 7% on the same kind of input.

Rate limits and the "same image again" loop

Free Gemini accounts hit daily caps quickly, and the Gemini chat has a known habit of returning the same image after you ask for a fix. Users in r/nanobanana recommend starting a new chat for every edit.

No print resolution on the free tier

Nano Banana 2 in the free Gemini app outputs 1K; 2K and 4K need a paid plan or an API route.

Where Nano Banana lives and what it costs

Nano Banana is not sold on its own; it comes with a Google account or through API resellers. CreateVision prices on 10 September 2026:

RoutePriceNotes
Gemini app, free account€0Nano Banana 2, 1K, daily limits, Gemini watermark toggle
Google AI Pro€21.99 / monthNano Banana Pro, higher limits
CreateVision: Nano Banana 2 (beta)30 credits / image at 1KUp to 14 references; refuses many real-person photos
CreateVision: Nano Banana Pro40 credits / image2K default, up to 5 references; used by our group, family and Christmas card tools

Credits at the $30 starter-pack rate are $0.01 each (so 30 credits ≈ $0.30); monthly plans are cheaper per credit.

Alternatives compared

All prices are CreateVision credits per image on 10 September 2026; measurements are from our published test (same prompts, 2K, 1024² grayscale diff outside the edit box).

"Not measured" means we did not run that model through the pixel-diff test — not that it scored badly.

Pick by what you make

By job:

Change one thing in a photo and leave the rest alone

GPT Image 2.5. It is the most surgical editor we measured and the fastest.

A real person's photo that Gemini keeps refusing

Seedream 5 or 4.0 first; Grok Imagine Image 2 if the edit is a costume or pose change. All three refuse far less than Nano Banana.

Something to print

Seedream 5 Pro at 2K, then the 4K upscale. Cleanest skin and sky in our test.

Merge five family photos into one

Stay on Nano Banana Pro. It binds multiple references better than anything else, and it does not refuse children.

Text in the image (posters, cards)

GPT Image 2.5 or Qwen Image 3; Seedream 5 misspelled words in our test.

Where CreateVision fits (and where it doesn't)

CreateVision runs Nano Banana and every alternative above, so this is not a "switch away" page — it is a "use the right one" page.

Where CreateVision helps

  • All six models on one balance with the credit price shown before you generate; failed generations are refunded.
  • Image-to-image defaults to Seedream 5 precisely because it refuses real photos far less than Nano Banana 2 beta.
  • One-click tools route each job to the model that actually passes it: couple and pet portraits on GPT Image 2.5, family and Christmas cards on Nano Banana Pro.
  • Unwatermarked output; a free print-resolution check for anything you want to frame.

Where it isn't

  • If you only need a few free edits a month, the Gemini app is free and CreateVision's free credits are limited.
  • Nano Banana 2 beta on CreateVision carries the same Google-side refusals as Gemini — we cannot lift them.

Nano Banana 2 beta 30 credits, Nano Banana Pro 40, GPT Image 2.5 40, Seedream 5 Pro 50, Seedream 5 40, Seedream 4.0 20, Qwen Image 3 20 per image at 1K–2K.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nano Banana free?

Nano Banana 2 is included with a free Google account in the Gemini app with daily limits and 1K output; Nano Banana Pro needs Google AI Pro (€21.99 a month in the EU). On CreateVision they cost 30 and 40 credits per image.

What is the best free Nano Banana alternative?

For occasional use, the Gemini app itself is free. Among other models, Seedream 4.0 and Qwen Image 3 are the cheapest at 20 credits per image on CreateVision, and free daily credits cover a few of them.

Which alternative doesn't refuse real-person photos?

Seedream 5, Seedream 4.0 and Grok Imagine Image 2 rarely refuse real photos of adults. GPT Image 2.5 accepts most adults and pets but is strict with children.

Which is better for editing, Nano Banana or GPT Image 2.5?

For "change only this" edits, GPT Image 2.5 was the most precise in our September 2026 test (1.1% of pixels changed outside the edit area). Nano Banana remains better at combining several reference photos into one image.
