The short version
Midjourney still has the most recognisable "look" in AI imagery, and V8.2's Edit Model is genuinely good. People look elsewhere because there is no free tier, the Basic plan is 3.3 GPU hours, the workflow lives in Discord or a web app with no API, and — the big one in 2026 — Midjourney does not edit your own photos anywhere near as well as the new editors do.
- For editing your own photos (the job Midjourney is worst at): GPT Image 2.5 — 1.1% of pixels changed outside the edit box in our test, 43–55 seconds per edit.
- For photoreal images that look printed, not rendered: Seedream 5 Pro (cleanest skin and sky we measured).
- For the Midjourney "painterly" feel at a lower price: Seedream 4.0 and 4.5 at 20–40 credits, or Qwen Image 3 at 20.
- For a free start: Z Image Turbo is free on CreateVision; Nano Banana 2 is free inside the Gemini app.
- Still Midjourney: stylised concept art with a consistent house style, and Relax mode's unlimited generations on Standard and above if you make hundreds of images a month.
Prices and tests as of 10 September 2026.
Why people look for a Midjourney alternative
The recurring reasons in 2026:
No trial, $10 minimum, Discord
Midjourney removed its free trial long ago. Basic is $10 a month for 3.3 fast GPU hours, and the community workflow still runs through Discord for many users.
It is not a photo editor
The 2026 use case is "take my photo and change one thing". Midjourney's Edit Model improved in V8.2, but purpose-built editors (GPT Image 2.5, Nano Banana 2, Seedream 5) keep identity and untouched pixels far better.
No API, no automation
There is still no official Midjourney API. Every alternative below has one, which is why aggregators can price them per image.
What Midjourney costs today
From Midjourney's plan comparison page, 10 September 2026:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Fast GPU time | Relax mode | Stealth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | $96 ($8 / month) | 3.3 h / month | No | No |
| Standard | $30 | $288 ($24 / month) | 15 h / month | Unlimited images | No |
| Pro | $60 | $576 ($48 / month) | 30 h / month | Unlimited images and SD video | Yes |
| Mega | $120 | $1,152 ($96 / month) | 60 h / month | Unlimited images and SD video | Yes |
Extra fast GPU time is $4 an hour on every plan. Companies with more than $1M annual revenue must buy Pro or Mega.
Alternatives compared
CreateVision credit prices per image on 10 September 2026 ($0.01 per credit at the $30 starter-pack rate; monthly plans are cheaper). Measurements are from our published test.
| Alternative | Credits / image | Free tier? | API | Edit your own photo | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT Image 2.5 (OpenAI) | 40 at 1K medium | No | Yes | Best measured (1.1% outside-box change) | Edits, text on image, transparent PNG, 15 ratios |
| Seedream 5 Pro (ByteDance) | 50 | No | Yes | Good (4.5%) | Print realism, skin and sky |
| Seedream 4.0 / 4.5 | 20 / 40 | No | Yes | Good | Cheapest painterly and photoreal generation |
| Nano Banana 2 / Pro (Google) | 30 / 40 | Yes (Gemini app) | Yes | Good, but refuses many real-person photos | Multi-reference fusion, group composites |
| Qwen Image 3 (Alibaba) | 20 | No | Yes | Fair | Text rendering, price |
| Grok Imagine Image 2 (xAI) | 60 at 1K | X Premium | Not public | Good | Costume and pose edits, lenient moderation |
| Z Image Turbo | 0 | Yes | Yes | No (text-to-image) | Free fast drafts |
Midjourney's Relax mode has no per-image price, so a heavy user on Standard ($30) can generate far more images than $30 of credits buys anywhere else. The comparison favours the alternatives for light and medium use, not for volume.
Pick by what you make
By job:
Concept art, moodboards, a consistent stylised look
Midjourney. Nothing else has its taste, and Relax mode makes volume cheap.
Editing photos of people you know
GPT Image 2.5 for surgical edits; Seedream 5 when the photo is one that Nano Banana or GPT refuses.
Product shots and print
Seedream 5 Pro at 2K, then a 4K upscale.
Posters and cards with words on them
GPT Image 2.5 or Qwen Image 3.
Free
Z Image Turbo on CreateVision for text-to-image drafts; Nano Banana 2 in the Gemini app for edits.
Where CreateVision fits (and where it doesn't)
CreateVision does not sell Midjourney (there is no API), so here is what it is and isn't.
Where CreateVision is a good Midjourney alternative
- Every model in the table on one balance, priced per image and shown before you generate; failed generations are refunded.
- A free text-to-image model (Z Image Turbo) and free daily credits, no Discord.
- One-click tools for the jobs Midjourney is weakest at: couple and family photos, ID photos, pet portraits, product mockups.
- Unwatermarked, commercial use, and a free print-resolution check.
Where it isn't
- No Midjourney model and no equivalent of its house style.
- No unlimited Relax mode: heavy users pay per image.
- No community feed.
Z Image Turbo free; Seedream 4.0 and Qwen Image 3 20 credits; Nano Banana 2 30; GPT Image 2.5 and Nano Banana Pro 40; Seedream 5 Pro 50; Grok Imagine Image 2 60.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Midjourney alternative?
Yes. Z Image Turbo is free on CreateVision for text-to-image; Nano Banana 2 is free in the Gemini app with daily limits. Neither matches Midjourney's style, but both are usable for drafts.
Which alternative looks most like Midjourney?
Seedream 4.5 and 5 Pro come closest for painterly and cinematic prompts; none reproduces Midjourney's specific aesthetic.
Does Midjourney have an API?
No official API as of September 2026, which is why it is absent from every aggregator including CreateVision.
What is cheaper than Midjourney for a few images a month?
Any per-image model. At 20–50 credits per image, $10 of CreateVision credits covers 20–50 images, versus Midjourney Basic's 3.3 GPU hours.
